Carson Wentz will set an NFL record in Week 3 in the most Vikings way possible

It makes so much sense for the Vikings to set this NFL record.

The Minnesota Vikings got some bad news on Monday when head coach Kevin O’Connell announced that quarterback J.J. McCarthy would likely miss Sunday’s Week 3 game against the Cincinnati Bengals with an ankle sprain. Shortly after, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that McCarthy would likely miss two to four weeks.

With McCarthy out, that means Carson Wentz, who joined the team at the end of August, is the likely starter at quarterback. That’s something that O’Connell is used to managing, as he led Josh Dobbs to a comeback win after he was with the team for just five days.

Carson Wentz to set NFL record for consecutive starts

Assuming that Wentz does get the start on Sunday against the Bengals, he will be getting a start with his sixth team in the last six years, becoming the first player to start for a different team in each of those years.

It’s been quite the journey for Wentz. He was the second overall pick of the Philadelphia Eagles in 2016 and looked like an MVP candidate in his second season. He tore his ACL in a late-season game against the Los Angeles Rams, and Nick Foles led them to the Super Bowl.

Things got worse in Philadelphia for Wentz, and he got replaced by Jalen Hurts. They traded him to the Indianapolis Colts, who then traded him to the Washington Commanders, and then he bounced around as a backup quarterback. His year with the Los Angeles Rams will end up helping him out with O’Connell’s offense.

Wentz setting this record with the Vikings is just perfect on every level. Since Dennis Green took over as the head coach in 1992, the Vikings have always chased veteran stopgap quarterbacks or had backups lead the way. Randall Cunningham, Brett Favre, and Case Keenum have led the Vikings to NFC Championship Game appearances, with only Favre beginning the year as the starter. They have also had multiple starts from the likes of Jeff George, Gus Frerotte, and Donovan McNabb, while signing Warren Moon and Kirk Cousins as veterans to take over in free agency.

The journeyman quarterback has become synonymous with the Vikings, which highlights how much it makes sense for Wentz to set the record as a Viking.
