When you look at Kevin O’Connell’s offense with the Minnesota Vikings, you see a lot of shot plays. O’Connell loves to attack the intermediate and deep sections of the field. In 2024, quarterback Sam Darnold was the best quarterback when throwing 20+ yards down the field in completions, completion percentage, and yards, while being second in touchdowns.

That attack has been a major factor in the 35-18 record of the Vikings during his tenure. No matter who has played quarterback, O’Connell has kept the same attack, and it’s mostly worked. However, that attack is only as good as it is because of one aspect: protection.

Christian Darrisaw is key to offensive success for the Vikings

Protection for an offense that likes to throw the ball downfield like O’Connell does needs an offensive line that can block for a long period of time. It’s why the offense ends up working the way it does. The loss of left tackle Christian Darrisaw has been massive for the Vikings to start the year, especially against the Atlanta Falcons, when starting quarterback J.J. McCarthy took six sacks.

NFL Pro dropped a stat that shows just how important he is to the offense’s success, as he kept the pocket clean, the third-longest on average for a left tackle at 3.41 seconds.

“Darrisaw missed much of the season following a torn ACL in Week 7 and is questionable to face the Falcons. The Vikings gained 8.5 yards per pass attempt and faced an overall pressure rate of 35.7% with Darrisaw on the field last season compared to 7.7 Y/A and 41.1% QBP with him on the sideline.”

Quite frankly, Darrisaw is a tremendous player for many reasons. Not only is he one of the best left tackles in all of football, Darrisaw is a major impact on the rest of the line. He can help out the left guard and make his job significantly easier. It also means the center doesn’t have to worry about rookie Donovan Jackson.

Darrisaw’s presence resonates the most when it comes to facing elite-level pass rushers like Trey Hendrickson this weekend. It will allow the Vikings not to have their tight ends chipping or double-teaming because of his talent. That allows the offense to be more dynamic and efficient. The offensive line is a weak link system, but when you have such a strong foundation in a player like Darrisaw, it makes a huge impact.

Upon Darrisaw’s return, the offense should stabilize in O’Connell’s ideal image, and that could be exactly what the doctor ordered.
