Minnesota Vikings get the news they’d been hoping for with Brian Flores, and it gives the fanbase hope for the 2026 season
Defensive coordinator Brian Flores has agreed to an extension with the Minnesota Vikings.
The Minnesota Vikings were hoping to keep defensive coordinator Brian Flores in the fold for the 2026 season, and they took the next step on Wednesday by agreeing to a contract extension with him.
Flores is one of the best defensive coordinators in the NFL and has proved it year in and year out. He’s been with the Vikings for three years, and they have compiled a 30-21 record during that time, largely on the backs of a great defense.
Brian Flores agrees to an extension with Minnesota Vikings
This has been a long time coming, and head coach Kevin O’Connell was upfront about how much they wanted him back.
“He’s been such a huge part of helping us daily, minute to minute, weathering the different storms we had to navigate this year. Things are in a really positive place right now,” O’Connell said ahead of the Week 18 finale against the Green Bay Packers. “I absolutely want Brian Flores to be the defensive coordinator of the Minnesota Vikings as long as we can have him.
“I would say this: he’s demonstrated a lot of things that, I imagine, he’s going to be a pretty popular guy [as a head coaching candidate] as well. And rightfully so. He’s earned everything. And that doesn’t take away from the route we want to go to make sure he’s our defensive coordinator here for the foreseeable future.”
Flores’ units have been excellent during his entire tenure. They have finished in the top half of the league in points and yards each season.
| Season | Points Ranking | Yards Ranking |
| 2023 | 13 | 16 |
| 2024 | 5 | 16 |
| 2025 | 7 | 3 |
With Flores back in the fold, the unit should stay at the same level. It will be year four in the system, and they have a really good foundation. Now, they need to continue fortifying the base with a great draft class and possible free agency acquisitions.
It’s important to note that Flores will only return if he doesn’t get a head coaching job, which he is still in the running for with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens.
This is a huge move for the Vikings, and their playoff aspirations just got stronger on Wednesday.
