Minnesota Vikings QB Kirk Cousins is coming off one of, if not his best seasons of his career.
Leading the Vikings to a 13-4 record (most wins in his career), completing 65.9% for 4,547 (career high) 29 touchdowns, 14 interceptions, an NFC North crown, a birth in the playoffs and his fourth Pro Bowl (Games) appearance.
The Vikings are committing to Cousins for the 2023 season, despite some pushback from others on the outside.
Retired NFL lineman Alex Boone joined Purple Daily – A Minnesota Vikings Podcast to discuss the future of the team. Stating his belief that Cousin's presence as QB1 will affect their abilities in free agency.
“If I’m a free agent, and I’m a guard, and Minnesota offers me and I’m like, ‘Are you guys really rolling with Kirk again? Are you doing this?'. I was all about him all year, one play could really screw you up. It would make me think twice… he is not going to take you anywhere.”
Boone played in the NFL from 2010-17, 2020. Primarily known for his time with the San Francisco 49ers, he played for Vikings for a season in 2016. Having never played with Cousins.
Boone's feelings about Cousins do fall in line with many from outside the organization. Believing the Minnesota Vikings are limited with how far they can go with Cousins at the helm.
In his first season under Head Coach Kevin O'Connell, Cousins and the Vikings reached fantastic heights in the regular season before losing in the first round.
Boone may be speaking from a free agent perspective, having been one himself a number of times but it's moot.
Cousins not only has the franchise's confidence going into next season but is on the hook for him for at least one more season before his contract is voidable.
It will remain to be seen if Cousins really a deterrent for free agent's. Though money is usually the loudest talker.
