Without much fanfare, the United Football League began their season on Friday night. The St. Louis Battlehawks trounced the Houston Roughnecks, but it was a game on Saturday afternoon that got the most attention from Minnesota Vikings fans.

The San Antonio Brahmas traveled to Arlington to take on the Renegades for the season opener with the former having some of the best odds to win the league title. Unfortunately, their season didn't start very well due to the performance of one former Minnesota Vikings player.

Kellen Mond struggles in season opener

Last weekend, the Brahmas named Kellen Mond their starting quarterback. He beat out Jarrett Guarantano and Kevin Hogan for the starting job. The former Texas A&M Aggie is working to try and make it back to the National Football League.

The season opener was a chance for Mond to prove himself after failing in his first NFL stint after the Vikings took him in the third round of the NFL Draft. He only played a few snaps in his career, all of which came with the Vikings at the ned of the season against the Green Bay Packers when Kirk Cousins was out with COVID-19.

After the game, then head coach Mike Zimmer was asked if he wanted to get an extended look at Mond and his answer spoke volumes about him

That has continued on through the first week of the UFL season. Mond struggled mightily against the Renegades. Mond completed 17 of 31 passes but had just 159 yards in a 33-9 loss that was over early in the fourth quarter at 30-3. He couldn't get out of his own way in the pocket, allowing pressure to impact him far too often.

One of the biggest things that hindered Mond in the NFL was his robotic-like throwing motion that was clunky. It's still there. Luckily for Mond, there are still nine games left, but it certainly wasn't the start he was hoping for, especially if he wants to prove Zimmer wrong.
