Interim GM Rob Brzezinski continues firm messaging regarding Minnesota Vikings’ future at quarterback
As much as we think we know about what the Vikings will do at quarterback, we still know nothing.
The only thing we know for sure about the Minnesota Vikings is that they won’t return the same quarterback room in 2026.
We know that J.J. McCarthy is going to be on the roster, as they selected him 10th overall in the 2024 NFL Draft. After him, there could be two different quarterbacks in the room come opening day. Head coach Kevin O’Connell has already made it clear about how much he wants competition in the room.
“I absolutely want a competitive situation,” said O’Connell. “Obviously, J.J. [McCarthy] is going to be a major, major emphasis for our staff and our team and me personally, and we’ll figure out what that looks like as we navigate the early part of this offseason when it comes to managing the roster.
“I think ultimately, we’ve got to decide how to not only continue J.J.’s progression, allow him to continue to ascend as a young player, 22-years-old with 10 starts, but at the same time, like I said, I think the competition in that room will only enhance our entire team.”
Rob Brzezinski continues vague messaging about the future at quarterback
We know that the Vikings are going to add talent to the room, but how they end up doing so is still a mystery. Interim general manager Rob Brzezinski spoke at the NFL Scouting Combine about the direction of the quarterback room, and
“It’s about exploring every potential opportunity,” said Brzezinski. “We need to have a baseline quarterback play to be successful. Every organization does. KO [Kevin O’Connell] has talked a lot about J.J. McCarthy and the confidence that we have in him. He’s been through some adversity from an injury standpoint. He’s a great person. He works really hard. The game is really important to him, and, like any room in our building, as far as positions, we want the best competition. And the quarterback room is the most important room, and we’re going to look under every stone to have the best option in that room with J.J.”
The messaging from Brzezinski is consistent with what O’Connell has been saying the entire time. It’s also completely understandable to want great competition in every room, but it’s odd to hear this from the Vikings. They actively avoided all competition when Kirk Cousins was the quarterback. They did so for six seasons. Now that they are having some adversity with their top-ten draft pick quarterback? It certainly is a major change of direction.
It also sends a strong signal that, no matter what they say, their faith in McCarthy is waning. If they were that confident in him moving forward, competition wouldn’t be the focus. It would be about the development of their young quarterback.
The trend line here seems to be focusing on the Vikings redshirting McCarthy for the season, which would be, even with a bad first season as a starter, a drastic move. It raises significant questions about the Vikings’ process and whether or not O’Connell is the guy to lead this team.
Whatever they choose to do will tell us a lot about how the Vikings see their future, along with how much they like McCarthy.
