Vikings GM Kwesi Adofo-Mensah’s answer to the J.J. McCarthy question sends a firm message about the future

While the future quarterback feels like J.J. McCarthy, Kwesi Adofo-Mensah wouldn’t commit to him being the starter.

The Minnesota Vikings are still waiting for their franchise quarterback. You can argue they’ve been waiting for a franchise quarterback since the retirement of Fran Tarkenton nearly 50 years ago.

Two seasons into J.J. McCarthy’s career, we have only seen him play in 10 out of a possible 35 games. During those performances, McCarthy didn’t inspire confidence that he would be the guy, and the Vikings are already being linked to other quarterbacks.

The McCarthy question will be discussed ad nauseam this offseason. General manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah was asked straight on if he wants McCarthy to be the starting quarterback next season, and the answer wasn’t exactly a glowing one.

“I want the Vikings to achieve our goals, and I think one of those goals is to make playoff runs and do different things like that,” Adfo-Mensah said. “I think he has the character and ability to be the person and do that for our organization. If I say that [I want him to be the starter] in 2026, that binds us into a certain area, the way we’ve set this team up.

“We built this like we’ve always talked about, give ourselves multiple shots at it, because you never know when there’s going to be a year where the field feels a little bit wide open, and you can make that run. So that’s what we’re really focused on talking about, whether it’s this year or next year. It’s my job to really bring that deep, competitive room that we’ve talked about to the Vikings.”

Long story short, Adofo-Mensah is keeping his options open and remaining non-committal to McCarthy’s future.

It shouldn’t be much of a surprise that the Vikings aren’t willing to commit to McCarthy long-term. He hasn’t given them a reason to do so. He completed less than 60% of his passes, while throwing 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. The underlying metrics were really poor, even for a rookie quarterback.

Adofo-Mensah likely believes his job is on the line this season, especially since the seemingly all-in approach didn’t work last season. This also sends a strong signal that another quarterback will be coming into compete next season, as winning is the most important thing.

This doesn’t mean McCarthy won’t be the franchise quarterback the Vikings have been begging for, but he will have to earn it.
