The Minnesota Vikings were facing an uphill battle to make the playoffs after starting 5-8, but the door was still open; they just needed a lot to happen to earn a spot.

That officially ended on Sunday afternoon in the early slate, as the Chicago Bears defeated the Cleveland Browns, knocking the Vikings out of the playoffs.

Minnesota Vikings’ elimination from the playoffs changes the approach to the final four games

It was a pipe dream for the Vikings to make the playoffs, as they needed the following to happen:

  • Chicago Bears to lose out
  • Detroit Lions to go 1-3, with their only win being over the Bears
  • Dallas Cowboys lose two games, including to the Vikings
  • Carolina Panthers or Tampa Bay Buccaneers (already lost one) lose two of their remaining games

That’s a lot to happen for a playoff spot, which is why it was a pipe dream from the beginning. With that happening, the Vikings will have a different approach for the final four games.

There will be a lot of discussion about how the Vikings need to tank and try to lose every game moving forward. That might be good when it comes to NFL Draft position, but that’s not the culture that head coach Kevin O’Connell has built in Minnesota.

They will likely start rotating in young players to give them valuable experience and do some deeper evaluation on the back end of the roster for the future. It will also be about J.J. McCarthy’s development, as he needs reps to continue growing and prove that the Vikings are doing the right thing by developing him.

There will also be some conversations about potentially sitting down players like Christian Darrisaw, who has been inconsistent this season after suffering a knee injury last year.

The Vikings will be an interesting team to watch over the last four games, and it could change a lot of things for the future.
