Minnesota Vikings make surprising move to keep key player expected to be leaving
The Minnesota Vikings got another player to take a pay cut.
The Minnesota Vikings are getting in a better spot each passing day with the salary cap. They got tight end T.J. Hockenson to take a pay cut over the weekend, and running back Aaron Jones has joined him. Instead of being cut to save $7.75 million on the salary cap, he will take a $3.5 million pay cut to stay with the Vikings.
It’s a big move for the Vikings, as they are going to have their 1-2 punch back with Jones and Jordan Mason leading the way.
Minnesota Vikings and Aaron Jones agree on a pay cut
It’s a really nice move for the Vikings to keep Jones. They no longer have a need at running back for the 2026 season with both Jones and Zavier Scott returning to the fold. It’s also a big deal for the Vikings to get some savings on the salary cap.
He was projected to cost $14.55 million on the salary cap before the Vikings planned on cutting him. Doing so would save the Vikings $7.55 million with $6.8 million in dead salary cap. The reported move will save the Vikings $3.5 million on the salary cap, dropping Jones’ base salary from $9 million to $5.5 million.
Just like they did with Hockenson, they waited things out with Jones and he agreed to a pay cut. His salary cap hit projects to be $11.05 million for the 2026 season. The good news for the Vikings is thye are only spending $4.25 million to keep Jones rather than cutting him, and they weren’t going to get a running back of his caliber for that price.
It’s a big deal for the Vikings’ offense, and they will be in a much better space.
