The Vikings initially brought Gaskin onto the practice squad after final cutdown day as their RB3 to avoid fully guaranteeing his contract for the season. This move is exactly why. They can put him back onto the practice squad and he will still have an elevation available to him.

Adding Tonyan to the active roster says that they don't believe that Nick Muse or (potentially) T.J. Hockenson will be activated before their week seven game against the Detroit Lions. They also might be moving Tonyan to the active roster to keep another team from poaching him off of the practice squad.
