Minnesota Vikings salary cap situation gets some relief after talented acquisition makes decision on his future
The Vikings now have another hole to fill on their offense.
The Minnesota Vikings have been making a significant amount of moves on the salary cap by restructuing wide receiver Justin Jefferson, left tackle Christian Darrisaw, and cornerback Byron Murphy Jr. Those moves saved the Vikings approximately $37 million on the salary cap, and they got more relief shortly thereafter.
Center Ryan Kelly was at the forefront of discussions regarding both his and the Vikings’ futures, and they got their answer on Friday, as he announced his retirement from the NFL after 10 seasons.
Ryan Kelly’s retirement creates a hole on Minnesota Vikings’ roster
It’s huge for the Vikings to save another $8.34 million on the salary cap, while taking $3.37 million in dead cap due to his signing bonus from last season. Once all of their moves are officially executed, the Vikings will be around $25 million under the salary cap, giving them plenty of money to make multiple, albeit low-cost, signings.
Kelly played very well this past season, but he missed significant time due to injuries. That was a theme throughout his career, but it was a bigger deal in Minnesota than it was throughout his tenure with the Indianapolis Colts.
He suffered three concussions during 2025, with the first coming in Week 2 against the Atlanta Falcons, and then another one two weeks later against the Pittsburgh Steelers. When he returned in Week 12 against the Green Bay Packers, he was wearing a guardian cap and a new helmet. That worked for the first four games back before suffering his third and final concussion of the season during a standard block against the New York Giants in Week 16.
Throughout the offseason, the Vikings were prepared to lose Kelly due to a potential retirement, and that came to fruition on Friday. On the roster, they have Blake Brandel and Michael Jurgens, who could be the center next season. They will likely add one in either free agency or the NFL Draft.
All the best to Kelly for a happy and healthy retirement.
