While the Minnesota Vikings (10-3) may have lost last weekend, unbelievably, they are still alive for the number one see in the NFC.
They are already secured a playoff spot and are only a win away from the NFC North title, homefield throughout the playoffs would go a long way to competing for a Super Bowl.
On the season, the Vikings are 7-1 at home. That one game being the embarrassing home loss to the Dallas Cowboys that many believe have "exposed" the Vikings. Claiming they are a fraud 10-3.
However, the truth of the NFL is you are only as good as your record says you are and you can only play who's on your schedule. Which is great news for the Vikings.
Despite being two games behind the Philadelphia Eagles, and theoretically the Cowboys, the Vikings actually have an easier path on their schedule to securing a number one seed. Guaranteeing home field throughout the playoffs.
Minnesota Vikings Remaining Schedule
- Indianapolis Colts (4-8-1)
- New York Giants (7-5-1)
- @ Green Bay Packers (5-8)
- @ Chicago Bears (3-10)
36.5-win percentage
Philadelphia Eagles Remaining Schedule
- @ Chicago Bears (3-10)
- @ Dallas Cowboys (10-3)
- New Orleans Saints (4-9)
- New York Giants (7-5-1)
46.2-win percentage
Dallas Cowboys Remaining Schedule
- @ Jacksonville Jaguars (5-8)
- Philadelphia Eagles (12-1)
- @ Tennessee Titans (7-6)
- Washington Commanders (7-5-1)
59.6-win percentage
Obviously, the Minnesota Vikings need to win out to make sure there are no issues. What has to happen between the Eagles and Cowboys, two of the only teams to beat Minnesota is a bit more complicated.
The Eagles need to lose at least two games. Both of them division games. If the Eagles are to lose to both the Giants and Cowboys, it would give the Eagles the same record as Minnesota, but Minnesota would have a tie breaker due to division record.
Assuming the Cowboys do, in fact, beat the Eagles, they would need to lose at least one more game. Putting them only a game behind Minnesota, but enough to give the Vikings the better seed.
The great thing about this time of year is all of these games are playoff games. Teams who are still fighting for a wildcard spot will play above expectations and teams who have already secured a spot will falter.
It might be a bit of a long shot but it's still very realistic that the Minnesota Vikings land the number one seed in the NFC.
