After training camp and preseason, let's see what the final roster could look like.
Quarterback (3)
IN: Kirk Cousins, Nick Mullens, Jaren Hall*
OUT: N/A
The skinny: It sure seems like the Vikings will keep three signal-callers. Cousins has rarely missed time to injury, meaning the team could likely get away with just two QBs. However, the rookie Hall looked serviceable and should only get better with experience. He would almost assuredly be claimed if waived.
Running Back (4)
IN: Alexander Mattison, C.J. Ham (FB), Kene Nwangwu, Ty Chandler
OUT: DeWayne McBride*, Abram Smith, Aaron Dykes**
The skinny: The Vikings have to be disappointed with the way this position group performed this offseason. Nobody stepped up and claimed the RB2 role and now the team could be forced to look elsewhere. Nwangwu didn't see any preseason action but will likely make the team due to his ability on special teams. McBride did not do enough to earn a spot, in my opinion. The rookie should land on the practice squad.
Wide Receiver (6)
IN: Justin Jefferson, KJ Osborn, Jordan Addison*, Jalen Nailor, Brandon Powell, Trishton Jackson
OUT: Jalen Reagor, Blake Proehl, Thayer Thomas**, Jacob Copeland**, Lucky Jackson**, Garett Maag**
The skinny: Most probably expect the team to roll with five receivers, but I believe this year will be different. Powell will make the team thanks to his ability on special teams and Jackson has been a star in camp for a few seasons now. Proehl had a good performance against to wrap up the preseason, but it was likely too little too late. I still like Jackson to grab the final spot.
Tight End (3)
IN: T. J. Hockenson, Josh Oliver, Johnny Mundt
OUT: Nick Muse, Ben Sims**, Collin Thompson
The skinny: Hockenson and Oliver will see a ton of snaps, so the team will likely role with just three TEs. Muse has played well this preseason but would likely make it onto the pratice squad. O'Connell is a huge Mundt fan.
Offensive Line (9)
IN: Christian Darrisaw, Ezra Cleveland, Garrett Bradbury, Ed Ingram, Brian O'Neill, Chris Reed, Blake Brandel, Oli Udoh, Vederian Lowe
OUT: Josh Sokol, Austin Schlottmann, Christian DiLauro, Jack Snyder, Alan Ali**, Jarrid Williams
The skinny: Unless an outside addition is made, this group should be set. Udoh will play the swing tackle role, but the team may look for an outside upgrade. I wonder if the Dalton Risner rumors will turn into anything.
Defensive Line (6)
IN: Dean Lowry, Khyiris Tonga, Harrison Phillips, Ross Blacklock, Jaquelin Roy, Jonathan Bullard
OUT: Esezi Otomewo, Sheldon Day, , T.J. Smith, Calvin Avery**, Junior Aho**
The skinny: Lowry, Phillips, Roy, and Tonga are locks. O'Connell has consistently praised the veteran Bullard so he's probably safe. Blacklock has played his way onto this roster, if the team decides to keep six. Otomewo would be a practice squad candidate if he goes unclaimed.
Outside Linebacker (5)
IN: Danielle Hunter, Marcus Davenport, Pat Jones II, DJ Wonnum, Andre Carter II**
OUT: Luiji Vilain, Benton Whitley
The skinny: Vilain and Whitley have both flashed at times, but I still have Carter making the team instead. Carter is the most likely to be claimed and the Vikings handed him a large bonus. The team won't give up on Carter just yet.
Inside Linebacker (4)
IN: Brian Asamoah, Jordan Hicks, Ivan Pace Jr.**, Troy Reeder
OUT: Troy Dye, Tanner Vallejo, Wilson Huber**, Abraham Beauplan**
The skinny: Pace joins Carter as a UDFA making the final roster. The linebacker has been a star this summer and the coaching staff has praised his play. The final spot will be between Reeder and Dye, with the slight edge going to Reeder.
Cornerback (5)
IN: Mekhi Blackmon*, Andrew Booth Jr., Akayleb Evans, Byron Murphy, Joejuan Williams
OUT: Kalon Barnes, CJ Coldon Jr.**,Tay Gowan, Jaylin Williams**, NaJee Thompson**
The skinny: This is a young and inexperienced group but they have performed better than expected. What looked like a weak group just months ago now is home to the most intense battles on the roster. It will be hard to get rid of Thompson and Barnes, but there's just not enough spots to go around.
Safety (5)
IN: Camryn Bynum, Lewis Cine, Josh Metellus, Harrison Smith, Jay Ward*
OUT: Theo Jackson, Jake Gervase
The skinny: This is a very talented group. Bynum and Cine will battle all season for the starting role, Metellus will see plenty of snaps owing to his versatility, and rookie Jay Ward has been a star this preseason. Jackson and Gervase would make several rosters so I doubt they make it to the practice squad.
Special Teams (3)
IN: Andrew DePaola (LS), Greg Joseph (K), Ryan Wright (P)
OUT: None
The skinny: Joseph is set to be the starting kicker for the third-straight season after rookie UDFA Jack Podlesny was waived. Barring a surprise, this will be the group of specialists.
