Minnesota Vikings make significant front office hire that sends a strong signal about the future at general manager
Rob Brzezinski made a key hire that shows what the Vikings are going to do moving forward.
The Minnesota Vikings have made some significant changes in the front office over the past week, and they continued that on Thursday. Interim general manager Rob Brzezinski made his first hire in Matt Thomas as a consultant to work through the NFL Draft.
Thomas has worked with Brzezinski before, as they were both employed by the Miami Dolphins in 1998. Brzezinski took the job with the Vikings the following year, and has been with the team ever since.
Rob Brzezinski’s first hire sends strong signal
It’s a really interesting hire from Brzezinski. He’s been the main salary cap expert for the Vikings over the last two decades, and his work is widely known across the league. Right after the Vikings chose to fire Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, Brzezinski received support from multiple people, including Blake Baratz, who is the agent for wide receiver Adam Thielen, defensive tackle Jonathan Allen, and fullback C.J. Ham.
The hiring of Thomas is solely to help out with the salary cap, which is Brzezinski’s normal job responsibilities. He’s one of the best at managing the salary cap and getting creative with contracts, but taking over as the interim general manager, Brzezinski made the smart move to bring in help in that area.
The key here is that Thomas is only being brought in to help out the Vikings through the NFL Draft. Why is that important? Brzezinski is only the interim general manager through the NFL Draft, and the Vikings will begin their search at that point.
This move shows us a few things. First, Brzezinski understands that his time is going to be focused more on other aspects of roster construction, and he will need help from someone he trusts. Second, it’s a signal that Brzezinski will end up returning to his role as the salary cap guru. There is still a chance that he could get the job full time, but this move being temporary says otherwise.
Brzezinski has been in the front office for 27 years, and he’s more than qualified to be the top decision maker in the organization. Will those decisions yield different results? I have my doubts, but it’s certainly possible, and that’s what the Vikings are hoping for.
