The Minnesota Vikings came away with a huge win in Week 8, but that's hardly been the main story.
Instead, the season-ending Achilles injury suffered by Kirk Cousins has dominated the conversation. It will be interesting to see how the Vikes decide to proceed without their star QB. The win on Sunday puts the Vikings in a spot where the team could decide to buy at the deadline.
Now, let's go over the good, the bad, and the ugly from this win.
The Good: The defense

The Viking defense was smothering against the Packers. The unit allowed just 10 points, 270 total yards, and forced a turnover. Jordan Love was also sacked 4 times.
Love was the leading rusher with just 34 yards. AJ Dillon and Aaron Jones were both completely neutralized. Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs also had minimal impact. All-in-all, just a great defensive performance from Brian Flores' unit.
The Bad: The running game

Once again, the Vikings’ run game was a non-factor. Alex Mattison finished with 31 yards on 16 carries. Cam Akers had 9 carries for 19 yards. It was surprising to see the team struggle against the Packers, considering the Packers have one of the worst run defenses in the league.
At this point, something needs to change. Perhaps in Week 9, Cam Akers and Ty Chandler should split carries and Mattison can sit. What the team has been doing isn't working, and a run game will be even more crucial without Cousins.
The Ugly: Kirk Cousins’ injury

This is just the last thing anybody wants to see. Cousins went down in the 4th quarter with a non-contract injury, so we knew it wasn’t good. Indeed, Cousins tore his Achilles and will miss the rest of the season. Not only that, but we may have seen the last of Cousins in a Vikings uniform.
Cousins was having a fantastic season heading into free agency, too. Now, the Vikes will try to salvage a season that is very much alive still. Will the team pivot to Jaren Hall, or will a veteran be brought in before the trade deadline? It's a situation the Vikings wish they did not find themselves in.
