The Minnesota Vikings were hopeful they were going to have running back Aaron Jones for Thursday’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers, and they got their wish. He was officially activated on Thursday, four hours before kickoff.

Where things get really interesting is who the Vikings chose to move on from to get Jones back on the roster from injured reserve.

Aaron Jones activated from injured reserve

The Vikings officially activated Jones from injured reserve, but they waived a member of their 2025 NFL Draft class in linebacker Kobe King.

The addition of Jones is going to be a big one in improving a running game that has been very successful (6th in the NFL in success rate), but has been massively lacking explosive runs (26th in EPA/rush). The other element to watch out for is head coach Kevin O’Connell potentially using 21 personnel. It was something he mentioned this offseason as a strategy to make an impact on offense.

The other element to this discussion is the Vikings waiving King. He was the 201st pick in April’s NFL Draft, and the Vikings were very high on him. However, him being waved could be due to special teams penalties, as The Athletic’s Alec Lewis opined. Plus, UDFA Austin Keys has been impressive.

The elevation of Byrd likely means one or both of Christian Darrisaw and Brian O’Neill could be out Thursday night. At the very least, he will provide extra depth.
