Minnesota Vikings running back Alexander Mattison received a significant bump in pay earlier in the offseason. With Dalvin Cook moving out of the picture, there is a strong chance that Mattison is able to eclipse the value on his two-year deal worth $7 million.

Built into Mattison’s contract is an additional $1 million available in incentives. In order to cash in on this hefty chunk of change, Mattison must meet certain benchmarks.

It should be noted that Mattison’s incentives are split evenly over the next two seasons, which means he will have to meet certain parameters in both seasons in order to take home the full amount.

Let’s take a look at Mattison’s contract incentives, per Spotrac:

IncentiveReward

750-999 yards rushing

$250,000

1,000 or more yards rushing

$500,00 ($250,000 + original $250,000)

To sum it up, if Mattison hits the 1,000-yard mark in each of the next two seasons he will be rewarded with the full $1 million in incentives. Entering his first season as the likely full-time starter, Mattison is already assuming his fair share of pressure.

With that being said, Mattison looks ready to take the next step. In his first three seasons he surpassed 400 yards rushing. His production dropped off in 2022 due to Cook remaining healthy, but he still managed to find the endzone five times on the ground.

The Vikings will happily fork over Mattison's money if it means the rushing attack is blossoming under a new committee. With just six career starts under his belt, Mattison is still one of the best-kept secrets in the NFL. However teams will find out quickly that he has every tool necessary in order to become a consistent 1,000-yard rusher.
