The deal was announced as a one-year extension worth $23 million with $22.4 million guaranteed. It felt to many that it was a negative with 2024 first-round pick Dallas Turner, but it's the exact opposite. Having three edge rushers is an objectively good thing, and it's something that general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah highlighted during an interview with the voice of the Vikings Paul Allen.

Andrew Van Ginkel's contract extension details revealed

The Vikings giving Van Ginkel an extension is a smart move for now and in the future. The exact details weren't known at the time, but we have them now, thanks to Over The Cap.

Looking at the details of the extension are key. Here are the main points:

  • $10 million signing bonus
  • Added void year
  • $7.44 million base salary in 2026 (decrease of $3.34 million)
  • $10 million signing bonus
  • $15.39 million base salary in 2027
  • Cap hit of $11.4 million in 2026 (down $1 million)
  • Cap hit of $19.4 million in 2026
  • $8.8 million dead in 2027

The details are really interesting for Van Ginkel. The Vikings didn't take a significantly smaller cap hit in 2025, meaning they have long-term plans for Van Ginkel. A near $20 million cap hit in 2026 shows that they believe Van Ginkel is going to perform for at least the next two years.

One really intriguing things about the contract is adding the void year. The Vikings adding that void year also signals they could see another extension down the line for Van Ginkel to potentially keep him past the 2026 season. The void year is also there to restructure his contract after next season with his $15.39 million base salary.

The Vikings are going to have some flexibility next year and Van Ginkel game them even more.
