The free agent class has been kind to the Minnesota Vikings this year. They have been really successful this season in getting production from their new players, especially on the defensive side of the football.

The Vikings have six new starters on the defensive side of the ball and they have all played really well. One of those is edge rusher Andrew Van Ginkel who has been the perfect addition to the defense with his versatility.

Andrew Van Ginkel sets NFL record

The Vikings have 20.0 sacks this season which ranks second in the National Football League and Van Ginkel has three of them. Arguably his more impressive number is the two pick-sixes he has to his name. In doing so, he became the first ever player to have 3.0 sacks and two pick-sixes in the first five games of a season.

The versatility that Van Ginkel has is what makes him so impactful for the Vikings. Defensive coordinator Brian Flores loves having players who can do multiple things. Van Ginkel played off-ball linebacker in college at Wisconsin and South Dakota and became an edge rusher in the NFL. Being able to do both things is the biggest difference between the 2023 and 2024 Vikings teams.

Van Ginkel has been a great addition for the Vikings and will continue to make a positive impact.
