When your team has an impressive season like the Minnesota Vikings had at 14-3, there are going to be teams that target coaches and front office personnel from your organization.
That is exactly where the Vikings are right now. They have already seen multiple teams request interviews of their staff with defensive coordinator Brian Flores getting multiple requests for interviews as a head coach. He's been one of the former head coaches getting calls for interviews, which shouldn't be a surprise after how great of a job he's done with the Vikings' defense.
Brian Flores talks head coaching interviews
It's one of the biggest storylines for the Vikings off-season whether or not the Vikings will get to keep Flores going into next year.
During his weekly Thursday press conference, Flores was asked about the head coaching interviews and gave a two-part answer.
"Yeah, I mean, anytime you're mentioned in, these kind of head coaching conversations, or receive requests, or, you know, it's an honor. You know, certainly, that you know, definitely don't take that lightly. And look, I look forward to, you know, having those conversations, talking to people about my football journey, my leadership journey, but I also kind of pride myself in being able to compartmentalize and really lock in on the things that are or prioritize, you know, the different things that are happening in my life. And I think everyone in this kind of profession does the same thing, because we all have a lot of things going on, and this is, you know, this is part of that."
"I plan on taking them all," said Flores. "I plan on sitting down and having conversations with any team that's interested in talking to me about that position. I look forward to talking to people about my football journey. And, yeah, when that, when that, when that time comes, I'll do that."
So far, Flores has already been requested by the New York Jets and Chicago Bears, but he did make clear that he is interested in the New England Patriots opening where he worked for years under Bill Belichick. If they were to lose Flores to another team as a head coach, the Vikings would get two third-round compensatory selections in the following two NFL Drafts.
"I mean, we're talking about going home where it all started," Flores said. "So I think that's a place that's definitely a special place. In talking about my football journey, that's where it started. So I would say yes [to questions about his interest]. But at the same time, it's not up to me as to whether or not they would want to talk to me or anything like that."
The Vikings' other aspect is their game the Los Angeles Rams. Because of that, the earliest that Flores could interview would be next week after the wild card round, something that puts him at a disadvantage.
However, that's not a big problem for the Vikings, as Flores made abundantly clear that his focus was on the Rams game.
"I can tell you this, I'm certainly locked in on the Rams, and you know, all the things that they do. And you know, for me, it's the players that are number one. And I'm always going to work and do things with, you know, their interest first. So, yeah, it's certainly an honor, but my number one priority is getting this team ready, or getting this defense ready to play against the Rams."
Flores has the right mindset for what is going on and there shouldn't be a concern about how the unit looks going into the playoffs.
