The Minnesota Vikings should be through the moon celebrating the hire of new defensive coordinator Brian Flores. However, there is reason to believe Flores’ stay in Minnesota could be short lived.
Flores is one of the best defensive assistants in the NFL, which explains why he was so highly sought after in the 2023 coaching cycle. His decision to coach for the Vikings followed his withdrawal from the Arizona Cardinals head coaching search, where he was considered to be a top candidate.
Though Flores, who served as the Miami Dolphins’ head coach from 2019-2021, was unable to land a head coaching gig this time around, he is once again expected to be a top name for next year’s coaching carousel, per Aaron Wilson.
Sure, Minnesota offers Flores another chance to call plays for the defense at the NFL level. But it also serves as a stable environment to spend one season before looking at more attractive head coaching vacancies across thew NFL landscape in 2024.
Even if Flores looks for greener pastures after next season, the Vikings’ defense won’t totally be uprooted upon his departure. With the talent Minnesota has on the offensive side of the ball, Flores’ impact on defense could contribute to a deep run in the postseason, possibly as far as the Super Bowl.
