The coaching carousel has been active over the last 48 hours, as we’ve seen multiple head coach openings get filled.

  • New York Giants: John Harbaugh
  • Atlanta Falcons: Kevin Stefanski
  • Miami Dolphins: Jeff Hafley
  • Tennessee Titans: Robert Saleh

The other openings are moving faster to find their guy, and we are starting to see the Minnesota Vikings get involved, mainly with assistants. They declined to extend the contract of offensive line coach Chris Kuper, and defensive assistants are being targeted for outside hires.

Defensive coordinator Brian Flores has already interviewed for multiple head coaching and defensive coordinator jobs, while passing game coordinator/defensive backs coach Daronte Jones has interviewed for multiple defensive coordinator positions, including one that could end up disastrous.

Green Bay Packers request interview with Daronte Jones

One of the first interview requests the Green Bay Packers made after Hafley took the Dolphins head coaching job was Jones.

Jones has been with the Vikings for five of the last six years. Mike Zimmer hired him ahead of the 2020 season, and he returned in 2022 when Kevin O’Connell became the head coach after one season as the LSU Tigers defensive coordinator. He’s very well liked and respected in Minnesota, and has played a big role in constructing the defense. Jones is also the most likely defensive coordinator candidate if Flores does end up taking a head coaching job.

Where things get interesting here is what Jones would do for the Packers if he took the job. In all likelihood, Jones would bring this scheme to Green Bay, and that could completely unlock Micah Parsons.

The pressure packages that the Vikings use could maximize what Parsons brings to the table, which would be perfect for the skill set that he brings. Remember, Parsons was an off-ball linebacker for the Penn State Nittany Lions, and having that element is excellent in maximizing this scheme.

Not only would this be a disaster for the Vikings, but it would make their biggest rival better. Talk about a double whammy.
