The Minnesota Vikings’ list of potential candidates for its vacant defensive coordinator position shrunk in size on Sunday.

Much has been made about the connections between Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell and Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero. ESPN’s Kevin Seifiert reported that the Vikings were hoping to land an interview with Evero, but that ship has unfortunately sailed for Minnesota.

The Carolina Panthers, now coached by Frank Reich, hired Evero to be their defensive coordinator on Sunday afternoon. Evero was one of the hottest name in the coaching cycle, but he’s found his new landing spot with an NFC foe.

Evero is the second candidate the Vikings have had plucked out from under them after the Atlanta Falcons hired Ryan Nielsen, who Minnesota had interviewed, to be the defensive coordinator.

There is no doubt that general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah is doing his due diligence in the Vikings’ search for the new leader of the defense. However, time appears to be of the essence. Minnesota needs to act fast before their options continue to dwindle.
