After struggling on Sunday agains the Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts head coach Shane Steichen said "We're evaluating everything" regarding Anthony Richardson being the starting quarterback this upcoming Sunday night.
If the Colts were to bench Richardson, it would be for quarterback Joe Flacco. When you look at the raw stats, Richardson isn't playing the best. He only completed 31.3% of his passes on Sunday and has a completion percentage of 44.4% on the season. WHat he does do well is throw deep, as he's one of the best in the National Football League in throws of 20+ yards.
Essentially, Richardson right now is a big play or bust quarterback. He struggles to throw in the short and intermediate areas which is usually the reverse of what you get from a top quarterback prospect.
The biggest thing for Richardson is that he needs reps. He has started just 10 games in the National Football League after starting just 13 in college and playing in 21 games at the University of Florida. He also threw just 455 passes at the college level where he had these same issues.
The quote of evaluating everything isn't just about Richardson. It's also about the scheme itself. There really isn't an easy button in this offense and that's not good for a young quarterback who is still developing.
For the Vikings, it could be a difficult task to prepare for the Colts' offense. They could be bringing in some different elements that they haven't shown much of this season, including a Flacco led offense without a lot of tape. That could make things tough on Brian Flores in terms of preparation.
This will be interesting to keep tabs on this week, especially since the offense will likely be significantly different.
