Free agency has been the Minnesota Vikings show for the majority of the first week. Not only did they have some of the higher profile free agents led by quarterback Sam Darnold, but also had multiple defenders cornerback Byron Murphy Jr. and safety Camryn Bynum out there as well.
After the Vikings got their big-ticket items in free agency, the entire focus shifted over to the quarterback position. While Darnold chose the Seattle Seahawks, the Vikings missed out on Daniel Jones, the lack of a veteran to pair with J.J. McCarthy has kept the door open for Aaron Rodgers to join the Vikings.
Latest update on Aaron Rodgers joining the Vikings
The majority of the reporting surrounding Rodgers coming to the Vikings has come from the Athletic's Dianna Russini and Mike Silver. They have been leading the charge on this topic with those like ESPN's Adam Schefter and NFL Network's Ian Rapoport have been saying he will choose between the Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Giants.
Russini and Silver teamed up with their Vikings beat writer Alec Lewis to discuss Rodgers to the Vikings with some interesting pieces of information with the newest one being confirmation that Rodgers wants to play in Minnesota.
Rodgers is hoping to sign with the Vikings, who went 14-3 in 2024 before suffering a first-round playoff defeat to the Los Angeles Rams. Meanwhile, the Vikings have been strongly weighing the possibility of pursuing Rodgers as a replacement for 2024 starter Sam Darnold, who signed a three-year, $100 million free-agent deal Wednesday with the Seattle Seahawks.
It's no surprise that Rodgers would want to play for the Vikings. Not only do they have a loaded roster with great infrastructure, but U.S. Bank Stadium is indoors, which will make a difference come playoff time. His performance last year raises a lot of questions about how well he will play moving forward.
Whether or not Rodgers can still play the game at a high level has been a debate for quite a while, but the Vikings don't seem to be too concerned.
The general assessment of Rodgers by Minnesota’s talent evaluators and coaches is that he remains a highly skilled passer who can still perform at a high level from the pocket, given the right supporting cast. Importantly, all parties believe that O’Connell is the decision-maker best equipped to know and understand what McCarthy’s mindset is, and how the young quarterback might react to Rodgers’ presence. O’Connell is also the person whose day-to-day reality would be most affected by such a move.
It isn't their assessment of Rodgers that raises the biggest flag, it's the mindset of J.J. McCarthy. Making sure he won't be phased by this decision is arguably the most important part of the discussion. Not only will he need to be okay about it in the building, but McCarthy will have to hear about it on ESPN and from local media consistently because of it being Aaron Rodgers. Can McCarthy handle it and is it a good idea to even ask him to?
The Vikings have a lot to ponder, but not having a decision on Rodgers by now leads me to believe that McCarthy is going to be the guy and everything here is smoke meant to get the Steelers and Giants to pay him more money.
Until he makes a decision, the Vikings and Rodgers will continue to be linked.
