When it comes to free agency, the Minnesota Vikings need to address the cornerback position. Their top four cornerbacks are all set to be free agents with Byron Murphy Jr. arguably the top player on the market overall.
While the Vikings are trying to bolster the secondary, they have had major discussions about bringing back Murphy, but haven't been able to come to a deal that works for both sides, leading to Murphy set to hit the market.
Cornerback market just got reset by Jaycee Horn
The Vikings were smart to try to extend Murphy at multiple points over the last year. He had a phenomenal season that led to him being a starter in the Pro Bowl Games.
The bet played off in a major way for Murphy, as his 2024 season was fantastic. Murphy had a career-high six interceptions and was a starter for the NFC in the Pro Bowl Games. He's also arguably the number one cornerback on the market this year. Because of that, Murphy could end up getting close to $20 million per year. Being that he just turned 27 years old and was such a key piece to the Vikings' success on defense.
It's an interesting position that the Vikings find themselves in, especially so after seeing the Carolina Panthers extend Jaycee Horn to a record-setting contract of four-years, $100 million, making him the highest-paid cornerback in the history of the National Football League.
It's hard to fully blame general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah for not being able to get a deal done, as he inherently made a major effort. to do so. It takes two sides to agree to a contract and that aspect, paired with Horn's deal, will make it harder to bring him back since the price will likely be in the neighborhood of $20 million per season
Is that going to be worth it for the Vikings? Time will tell.
