The Minnesota Vikings have been great in free agency over the course of the first two days of the legal tampering period. They signed six outside free agents while retaining cornerback Byron Murphy Jr. on a three-year extension.
Not only did the Vikings bring in talented players, but they were able to agree to terms with three of them on contracts that don't count toward the compensatory formula: safety Bubba Bolden, defensive tackle Jonathan Allen, and defensive tackle Javon Hargrave. They may have committed the most money to players during free agency, yet they still have more to dish out.
The Vikings should sign Cooper Kupp
Right now, the Vikings arguably don't have a single major need left on the roster. They have fortified the trenches on both sides, fortified the cornerback room, along with retaining key pieces. They can now chase after secondary needs with one of them being wide receiver.
Between now and the end of the NFL Draft, the Vikings will need to add three receivers to keep the room full and you can make a solid argument that they should also upgrade at the WR3 spot. If they do that, Cooper Kupp would be a logical replacement, as the Los Angeles Rams released him on Wednesday.
The idea of Kupp is an interesting one. He's been really good over the course of his career, but there have been too many inconsistencies, mainly due to the rash amount of injuries he's suffered in his career.
Across eight seasons, Kupp has missed a total of 28 games with season-ending injuries in both 2018 and 2022. In fact, Kupp has only played in every game two times: 2019 and 2021. That 2021 season was magical with Kupp winning the triple crown with the most receptions (145), yards (1,947), and touchdowns (16).
There are a couple of reasons why the Rams decided to move on from Kupp:
- Money
- Injuries
He was due a salary cap hit of $29 million and the Rams save just $7 million on the salary cap. It also raises the question: does Kupp have enough left in the tank? If he does, it's a no-brainer for the Vikings. There are two link: between the Kupp and the Vikings: head coach Kevin O'Connell and offensive coordinator Wes Phillips.
Kupp would provide something that the Vikings could use with their third wide receiver: the ability to separate underneath and blocking in the running game. Kupp is one of the best blocking wide receivers in the game and a pivotal reason why the Rams' use of 11 personnel was so successful in all facets.
He isn't the Kupp of 2021 when O'Connell was a crucial part of his triple crown win and will be able to maximize whatever he has left.
