One veteran free agent that makes perfect sense for the Vikings

The Minnesota Vikings should look into pursuing one free agent that has prior experience to playing in the team’s new defensive scheme.

The Minnesota Vikings could be a major player for the services of one well-respected veteran defender.

The Washington Commanders announced that it had released slot cornerback/safety Bobby McCain on Monday. Washington made the move to save $4.42 million in cap space, and likely plans to get younger at the position this offseason.

Meanwhile, the Vikings are turning over every stone in an attempt to improve upon the NFL’s second-worst pass defense in 2022. Not only would McCain fit the bill for the Vikings, but he also has experience playing under the direction of Brian Flores.

Now the Vikings’ defensive coordinator, Flores was the head coach of the Miami Dolphins from 2019-2021. His first two years in Miami overlapped with McCain, who started 23 games in that span.

McCain won’t break the bank if the Vikings intend on plucking him from the free agency pool. His hard-nosed style of play fits perfectly in Flores’ system.

Continuity will be difficult to come by for Flores’ defense with numerous players hitting free agency. But if the Vikings can sign a couple of players who are comfortable in Flores’ system, the growing pains in 2023 shouldn’t be noticeable.
