The Minnesota Vikings are expected to be in the market for a quarterback in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Starting quarterback Kirk Cousins will be playing in a contract year in 2023, as his contract will expire after the season. Backup QB Nick Mullens is signed to a one-year deal, which leaves the Vikings unattached to a single quarterback beyond the 2023 season.

The draft is the next opportunity for Minnesota to address the position, but general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah isn’t shutting the door on anything.

“Quarterback is the most important position in our sport,” Adofo-Mensah said at his pre-draft press conference on Thursday. “And you know, ultimately these aren't things you just kind of decide in the moment. You have to you have to have plans, you have to have strategies, you have two different ways of getting to that answer. So we've had these conversations, they are ongoing. There's lots of different avenues in terms of addressing that position. I wouldn't necessarily box us in to just one. But again, we do know that it's the most important position in the sport and we'll treat it with that kind of importance.”

With the No. 23 overall pick in the draft, it’s unlike that Minnesota will have one of the top four quarterbacks slide that far. The next wave of quarterbacks isn’t as attractive, but the Vikings have done their due diligence on Hendon Hooker and Dorian Thompson-Robinson among others.

The Vikings do have more pressing needs when looking to the 2023 season, so the team could kick the quarterback can down the road and find an answer next offseason. Adofo-Mensah is keeping the team’s options open beyond the draft later this month.
