Minnesota Vikings aren’t just in danger of losing Brian Flores, as his top replacement option continues to receive interviews
Passing game coordinator Daronte Jones received another interview for a defensive coordinator position, this time with the New York Giants.
While the Minnesota Vikings are waiting to see if defensive coordinator Brian Flores will return to his position. He’s had multiple interviews so far during this coaching cycle, and he is still a frontrunner for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens coaching jobs.
If he leaves Minnesota, it will stink for the Vikings. His units have been among the best in the league, but it’s how well he’s adapted and maximized the talent on the unit that really stands out. The Vikings have yet to complete any interviews for candidates to replace Flores, and their best internal candidate is in danger of being unavailable.
Vikings passing game coordinator Daronte Jones receives another interview
If Flores takes a head coaching job, passing game coordinator and defensive backs coach Daronte Jones will arguably be the top candidate to replace him, and Minnesota is in danger of losing him.
The New York Giants became the third team to request him for an interview for their defensive coordinator position.
Jones, 47, has been with the Vikings for five of the past six seasons. Mike Zimmer hired him ahead of the 2020 season, but he left for the LSU Tigers’ defensive coordinator position. When Ed Orgeron was fired, Jones was out of a job and returned to the Vikings to work for head coach Kevin O’Connell and defensive coordinator Ed Donatell. He stayed when Flores took over the defense in 2023 and has been a rising star for the Vikings.
It shouldn’t be much of a surprise that he is getting this much interest, especially since he’s Flores’ top assistant. They want a piece of this fascinating defensive scheme, especially since other units will have more talent that can elevate it to another level.
The Vikings are waiting to conduct interviews, and being this patient for Flores could end up biting them in the butt. Jones would likely maintain continuity with the unit, which would be huge for the Vikings in the short and long term.
The next steps for the Vikings will be determined by Flores, and it’s becoming increasingly frustrating by the day.
