The Minnesota Vikings have a great head coach in Kevin O'Connell.
When the Vikings brought him in after the Los Angeles Rams won the Super Bowl after the 2021 season, they did so with the belief that O'Connell would end up being the guy to lead them to the promised land.
It's been a really good start for the Vikings under O'Connell, as they currently sit at 6-2 and 26-16 overall across the first three seasons.
Kevin O'Connell explains comments to Anthony Richardson
The league caught O'Connell giving Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson after the game on Sunday night. He was asked about it during his Friday press conference and his words directly reflect the character he has.
"It was probably a tough week on him, and I just felt like in that moment I wanted to make sure I sought him out and just let him know, knowing like I said to him, how much that organization still believes in him. Just give him a bit of encouragement, I don’t know if it circles back to me all the time, it’s incredibly narcissistic to talk like that, but I just felt like in that moment I had a relationship with him going through the pre-draft process and just felt like it was something I wanted him to know how I felt. Whether it meant something to him or not, didn’t matter and I think it’s a good thing for everybody in society to do if you have the ability to help somebody else in circumstances that maybe as they’re working through it are less than ideal.
"But there is a road and a path and a rather large one in my opinion, to him having a very successful NFL career. Quarterback journeys are what they are and every single one of them has their own story, so I just felt like, if I could have an opportunity to let him know how I feel about him, where he’s at now and where I think he’s going in the future, it was a good moment to tell him that. I’m just a big fan that if you have something to say to uplift somebody else, you might as well say it and not keep it to yourself. "
Things like this are why the Vikings chose O'Connell to be their head coach. He is a genuine human being who continues to show care and compassion for those surrounding him.
One thing is for sure. Vikings fans should be glad he's in Minnesota.
