What you see here is likely not going to be the case come late April, but nothing is certain when it comes to the NFL Draft. The Minnesota Vikings were sent defensive tackle Jaquelin Roy in the first round of a way-too-early mock draft months before they selected him in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL Draft.
Looking at the upcoming NFL Draft is going to be interesting with how general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah approaches it with the way the class is structured. Would he go in a completely different direction?
Would Kwesi Adofo-Mensah draft a RB with a premium pick?
That question is an interesting one, as Adofo-Mensah isn't a traditional analytics guy. He's made decisions that aren't traditionally analytics based. One position they have made some investments in is at running back and they could stand to make more.
Here at A to Z Sports, we did a collective mock draft and I made the selection for the Vikings at 28th overall and it was an easy one in Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty.
It's not a premium position, but this is a slam dunk if Jeanty falls this far. Jeanty is a complete running back who will be a major weapon for the Vikings.
Jeanty is one of, if not the best, players in the entire country. He is currently carrying the Broncos to a potential College Football Playoff spot and drawing comparisons to Barry Sanders. That's extremely high praise but it's well deserved.
A true three-down back, Jeanty has insanely great contact balance with excellent agility and vision. He can also catch the ball out of the backfield and pass block really well with good leverage and technique.
The big question is if Adofo-Mensah would be willing to spend a first-round pick on a running back. Well, the game is trending back toward running backs being more valuable and he's an elite-level prospect at the position. Plus, the Vikings might not be willing to trust Aaron Jones past this season due to his age and injury history.
With the defensive line and cornerback classes also being deep like at running back, this may be considered somewhat of a luxury pick, but maximizing J.J. McCarthy out the gate should be viewed as the most important thing that Adofo-Mensah needs to accomplish over the next few years.
