Through three regular seasons, the Minnesota Vikings are now 34-17 with general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah and head coach Kevin O'Connell. It's been a very impressive start to the regime, especially when you see what Ryan Poles, who was the other finalist for the Vikings general manager job, has done in Chicago.
This season, the Vikings are 14-3 and were very close to winning the NFC North and getting the number one seed in the NFC. Things are trending upward for the organization and that is thanks to the leadership of both Adofo-Mensah and O'Connell.
Kwesi Adofo-Mensah proves brilliance in roster management
The Vikings have become quarterback rehab after the job that O'Connell did with both Kirk Cousins and Sam Darnold. O'Connell raised both of their games to a new level, which earned Cousins $90 million fully guaranteed and Darnold primed to get a similar contract.
The next guy up could be Daniel Jones, who signed with the practice squad a few days after the New York Giants released him in November. Now, Jones could end up leaving the Vikings this offseason if they end up keeping Darnold, and if that happens, it could now be a major benefit.
The Vikings have signed Jones to the active roster and released quarterback Brett Rypien. Keep an eye out for Rypien to be added to the practice squad.
The move is a smart one for multiple reasons. First, Jones is a better option than Rypien and possibly Nick Mullens if the Vikings are comfortable with how well he operates the offense.
The other aspect is the compensatory draft formula. The Vikings could use some more compensatory selections with how limited their current draft capital is. If Jones were to sign elsewhere this offseason, he would count toward the compensatory formula, which could net the Vikings a draft pick in 2026.
That type of maneuvering by Adofo-Mensah is smart, as it gives the Vikings more shots at getting great players in the building.
