The offseason has yet to begin for the Minnesota Vikings. Still, general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah has already gotten started on the beginning stages of getting their roster together for the 2025 season.

The Vikings had waived quarterback Brett Rypien to sign Daniel Jones to the active roster so he will qualify for the compensatory formula. To keep the quarterback room whole for the playoffs, the Vikings added Rypien to the practice squad.

However, it was the other roster move that the Vikings made which raises a lot of intrigue.

Vikings sign CFL star to futures contract

The Vikings have taken a lot of shots at bringing in players from the Canadian Football League in the past. Their Hall of Fame head coach Bud Grant came from the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and they've brought in other stars in the past 15-20 years.

Adofo-Mensah decided to step into the CFL waters by signing offensive lineman Trevor Reid from the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Reid comes to the Vikings from the CFL after going undrafted in the 2023 NFL Draft out of Louisville. He spent some time with both the Philadelphia Eagles and Atlanta Falcons during training camp before heading to Canada. Per the Vikings' press release, Reid earned the Roughriders nomination for the Most Outstanding Rookie award after starting all 18 regular season games and the Western Conference Semifinals against British Columbia.

The Vikings have needs on the offensive line, especially on the interior. They could also use another swing tackle to pair with Walter Rouse in the future, as David Quessenberry is already 34 years old.

Taking a shot on Reid is a great idea for the short and long term. If it works, the Vikings have a low-cost option and if it doesn't, it costs them next to nothing.
