Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell is going to be on the search for another assistant coach. Assistant wide receivers coach Tony Sorrentino is getting a promotion, as Arizona Cardinals head coach Mike LaFleur has hired him as wide receivers coach.

This is now the sixth assistant coach that the Vikings need to replace this season.

Kevin O’Connell has another assistant coach to replace

It’s not the most ideal situation to replace that many assistant coaches in a single year, but it could be a blessing in disguise. The offense was a rough unit overall this past season for the Vikings, posting the worst dropback/EPA the team has had this century, per Locked on Vikings via TruMedia.

O’Connell didn’t end up firing anyone, but they did choose not to renew the contract of offensive line coach Chris Kuper. Only making one move was a surprise, but it did send a strong signal that they believed the offensive line and general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah were the problem.

Sorrentino was with O’Connell since he took over the Vikings after the 2021 season. He was the wide receivers coach at Northern Illinois University, where he coached Trayvon Randolph to a successful season. Before that, Sorrentino spent time at Florida Atlantic, Tennessee, Miami, and The College of New Jersey.

He had a big hand in helping Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, and Jalen Nailor develop. With him moving onto the Cardinals, Sorrentino will get to work with Marvin Harrison Jr. and Michael Wilson, both of whom are up-and-coming receivers in the NFL.

How O’Connell will end up replacing him is up in the air, but it will be interesting to see what he does.
