Now that the dust has begun to settle following the 2023 NFL Draft the Minnesota Vikings can begin preparing for training camp. But with so many new faces having arrived through free agency and the draft, it might take fans a while to familiarize themselves with some of these newcomers.
One player who won’t take long to point out is DE Marcus Davenport. The Vikings inked the pass rusher to a four-year deal worth $13.7 million earlier this offseason. But Davenport’s 6’6” 265-pound frame won’t be the only way to identify the former first rounder.
On Monday it was announced that Davenport will be the first player to ever wear No. 0 for the Vikings. Prior to this season, players were not allowed to wear the number zero, but Davenport is pioneering the change in Minnesota.
Hopefully his sack total doesn’t reflect his jersey number in the 2023 season. Davenport struggled in 2022, registering just 29 tackles, two TFLs and 0.5 sacks. While his production was underwhelming, he did record nine sacks in the 2021 season and still possesses high upside.
Davenport will be a key to Minnesota’s pass rush and ultimately their defensive success. Although he has already found himself in the Vikings’ history books, hopefully his name will appear under some single-season records with a strong season donning the purple and gold.
