- 24th overall: Donovan Jackson, OL, Ohio State
- 102nd overall: Tai Felton, WR, Maryland
- 139th overall: Tyrion Ingram-Dawkins, DL, Georgia
- 201st overall: Kobe King, LB, Penn State
- 202nd overall: Gavin Bartholomew, TE, Pitt
With the additions the Vikings made, there were players who ended up being big losers, but one came out of the draft a big winner.
Loser: LG Blake Brandel
Going into the offseason, the entire world knew that the Vikings needed to improve on the offensive line. Within that question was another: how far would they go?
Initially, I was very hesitant in believing they would end up replacing all three players on the interior. They ended up replacing center and right guard in free agency, but it was the selection of Jackson that ended up hurting Blake Brandel.
A former sixth-round pick out of Oregon State, Brandel signed a three-year deal last offseason and was the starter at left guard all year. He thrived when Christian Darrisaw was healthy, but struggled once he got injured. Now that Jackson has been picked, Brandel likely isn't in danger of losing his roster spot, but his starting spot is all but gone.
Loser: ILB Brian Asamoah II
The linebacker position isn't one that has been a major focus in the tenure of general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, but he has made some real additions over the last few offseasons.
This year, the selection of King could mean the end for one of just three players left on the roster from the 2022 NFL Draft. He looked to have a lot of promise going into the 2023 season, but has been relegated to special teams. That could be done if King has a good training camp.
Winners: CB Dwight McGlothern and S Theo Jackson
If I were to have told you that the Vikings didn't address the secondary at all in the NFL Draft, would you have believed me? I certainly would have been surprised, but maybe we shouldn't have been.
At the owners meetings, head coach Kevin O'Connell spoke highly about Isaiah Rodgers, and that should have tipped us off.
"Isaiah was a guy that 'Flo' identified pretty early. I've been doing this long enough with Flo, but once he has that tone in his voice about guys, he's been pretty darn accurate."
Without adding any secondary pieces, the Vikings are likely going to let Jackson be the starter, and McGlothern has a chance to be a true rotational player in the cornerback room with his biggest competition being Tavierre Thomas.
