Of those 41 prospects, 12 of them have been in the defensive backfield for a total of 167 selections, a whopping 52%. That number was both before the beginning of free agency and after.

Vikings select elite athlete defender in latest mock draft

With that being said about selecting defensive backs, the latest mock draft from our own Ryan Roberts at A to Z Sports has the Vikings selecting Nick Emmanwori, a safety from South Carolina.

Harrison Smith is coming back for another season, but Emmanwori looks like the perfect heir apparent to the Hitman. In the short term, he is the perfect compliment on the back end. Emannwori can make plays on the second level, in the slot, and in zone coverage.

The Vikings could certainly use more safety depth, as Smith currently is entering the 14th year of his career. He's been the catalyst for the Vikings his entire career, playing both at the line of scrimmage as a blitzer and being a successful deep safety.

The element that Emmanwori brings that would be intriguing for defensive coordinator Brian Flores is his unique size/speed/versatility. He would be a joker in the best ways.

Fans wanted the Vikings to take Baltimore Ravens safety Kyle Hamilton in the 2022 NFL Draft because of his unique blend of size and versatility. They chose to pass and instead picked Lewis Cine with a trade down. That still gets talked about among Vikings fans, as Hamilton is thriving with the Ravens and the top three picks in that draft for the Vikings are all off the team.

Emmanwori would immediately provide a boost for a Vikings defense that could use a joker.
