The Minnesota Vikings are placing tight end Nick Muse on injured reserve with a broken hand. He suffered the injury early on against the San Francisco 49ers. After starting the season on the practice squad, running back Myles Gaskin has been signed to the active roster in Muse's place.

It's certainly a disappointment for Muse who looked to be developing at a solid level for the Vikings in his third season out of South Carolina. It wasn't his talent that stood out, but rather his toughness.

Nick Muse's ultimate display of toughness with onside kick

Not only did Muse play the remainder of the game against the 49ers, he recovered an onside kick at the end of the game to seal the win for the Vikings. Head coach Kevin O'Connell

"Nick Muse early on in the football game. Did have a fracture in his in his hand. Could play, but it would require him to wear, you know, cast on his hand and have that thing wrapped. So, Nick's value is a blocker and a pass catcher for us on game day, we thought best to allow that thing to heal over the next three to four weeks. He was placed on short-term IR, which will allow us to get Myles Gaskin as our third back on the roster, and then I'll keep you guys posted about what the plan of attack is at the tight end position as the week goes on."

It's already difficult enough to field an onside kick but doing so with a broken hand is on a different level. We haven't seen that kind of toughness at tight end since the days of Jim Kleinsasser.

What will the Vikings do at tight end? It's likely that Robert Tonyan will get elevated over the next three weeks and then T.J. Hockenson is likely coming back after the bye week.

It's disappointing that Muse is hurt but a broken hand should have him back soon.
