The Minnesota Vikings are the National Football League's first 4-0 team this season after defeating the Green Bay Packers by a score of 31-29. It was the first time the Vikings had faced real adversity after going up 28-0 in the first half.
Once they got up 28-0, things kept happening to derail the Vikings' chances to win the game. It started with a muffed punt by Jalen Nailor and Sam Darnold threw an interception in the red zone (shouldn't have counted) and a strip sack that gave the Packers the ball inside the 30-yard line and turned into the touchdown that brought the Packers within six.
Despite all of that and then some, the Vikings never waivered.
Minnesota Vikings are in the proper mindset for Super Bowl run
Once things started going sideways for the Vikings, there was a widespread panic. We've been here before seeing the Vikings blow a 21-point fourth-quarter lead against the Cincinnati Bengals last December and there have been many more like it in the team's history.
Against the Packers, things felt different than they had in the past. No matter what happened, this team didn't waver, drop their head or come close to giving up. Quarterback Sam Darnold talked about how they were mentally prepared going into that pivotal drive after the Packers got it within one score.
"Yeah, I think that's just it. I think it's, you got to have that mindset. You can't think about what might happen, or what has happened, you know, them coming back. You always got to continue to have that mindset of just, one step in front of the other, one foot in front of the other. And as long as we continue to have that mindset as an offense, as a whole team, you know, I feel like we'll be right."
That mentality is huge for the Vikings. They need to be a mentally strong team in order to make a run for the Super Bowl. What was huge for the Vikings is they got to experience the necessary adversity to grow as a football team without having to lose the game.
They knocked the Packers down a few times early and when they got knocked down, they bounced right back up and kept fighting. That is going to serve them well as they continue to battle this season.
Make no mistake, the Vikings are for real and continue to prove it.
