Free agency is set to kick off in a week and the Minnesota Vikings are in prime position to make a humungous impact.

When general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah took over for Rick Spielman, the roster was in a rough spot. Multiple rough contracts that were a drag on the salary cap situation paired with an aging roster left him with quite a job to do. He chose to do a competitive rebuild which was somewhat controversial across the league.

“It’s a little riskier than tearing everything down and being bad for a while and coming back up,” Adofo-Mensah said before the 2023 season. “I know that. I can tell you the mathematical probability of doing it that way. And that’s the way other teams may have chosen, but that’s not the way we’re trying to do it.”

He's done a great job in getting the Vikings set up for success, especially with the salary cap.

Vikings have a very healthy salary cap

When Adofo-Mensah utilized the competitive rebuild, the goal was simple: remain competitive while resetting the roster. When you look at other teams who have torn it down completely, how many have actually succeeded? You could argue the Cleveland Browns, but they were in a perpetual rebuild for over a decade.

The reality is, that traditional rebuilds don't manifest themselves in reality like they do when you play Madden. Plus, when you look at how the Vikings have been successful in their three years of the competitive rebuild with a 34-17 record in that timeframe.

The number one thing that Adofo-Mensah has done is bring the salary cap into a really good place with a lot of flexibility. The Vikings currently have $63,032,543 in salary cap space per Over The Cap going into free agency with 53 players currently on the roster. That will allow Adofo-Mensah to maneuver in free agency and throw their money around.

Where the real flexibility comes in is how the next few years look. They don't have bad contracts on the books and can maneuver with base salaries to create cap space.

  • 2026: $107,008,844 (19 players under contract)
    2027:
  • 2027: $177,023,886 (10 players under contract)

Keep in mind that these are projected numbers with the salary cap, as we won't know them until around the NFL Scouting Combine. Those numbers could change but the fact that the Vikings have just 10 players under contract with multiple core pieces being among those 10 players.

It also matters for this year. The Vikings can choose to front-load contracts without having to worry about being very specific with their contract language. They can do pretty much whatever they want.

There is an insane amount of flexibility that Adofo-Mensah has at his disposal over the next three years to form the Vikings to earn their first-ever Vince Lombardi Trophy.
