Vikings inadvertently school Dan Campbell during Week 7 loss to Eagles
Success often comes in the details, and the Minnesota Vikings had them dialed in on Sunday.
The Minnesota Vikings had quite the day on Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles. Old problems resurfaced during the game, and it ended up proving too costly. The Vikings had six red zone possessions, but only one of them resulted in a touchdown.
That is something that the Vikings cannot have happen. They need to convert in the red zone. Their first conversion on the game was in the third quarter when they ran a play that an NFC North rival got penalized for just a week prior.
Kevin O’Connell shows Dan Campbell how to motion out quarterbacks
Last Sunday night, when the Detroit Lions faced the Kansas City Chiefs, they tried running a trick play on fourth and goal, when quarterback Jared Goff ran in motion and caught a pass from David Montgomery.
It’s a cool play that the Lions can use to branch off moving forward. Offensive coordinator John Morton has continued the creativity that Ben Johnson had when he was the offensive coordinator under head coach Dan Campbell. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out for one reason: it’s an illegal play.
When the quarterback lines up under center and they motion out, they need to get fully reset before the snap to become an eligible receiver. This isn’t how things have to be when you lineup in the shotgun. That ended up being an illegal play, forcing the Lions to kick a field goal instead of scoring a touchdown.
Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell called a similar look on the goal line, but they didn’t have an illegal formation penalty.
You can hear color commentator Greg Olsen on the call mention that Wentz needs to set before the snap. He does, and Jordan Mason runs a sweep to the far side of the field and scores the touchdown.
Understanding the rule book is one of the most important elements of running trick plays. You can end up costing yourself points on the scoreboard.
