It's been an active week for the Minnesota Vikings. Not only are they set to be active in trying to trade back in the NFL Draft on Thursday, but players are in the building for the start of OTAs.
Head coach Kevin O'Connell hosted a press conference at the start of OTAs to kick things off and the excitement in his voice was real. Unfortunately, the beginning of OTAs also brought some bad news.
Vikings waive/injured special teams ace NaJee Thompson
Earlier in the day on Tuesday, the Vikings waived offensive lineman Trevor Reid, who they signed from the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the CFL. He was the Roughriders' nominee for Most Outstanding Rookie, which was a good profile to bet on.
On Wednesday, they made another move, waiving special teams ace NaJee Thompson with a failed physical designation.
That's an unfortunate one for the Vikings, as Thompson was a vital part of their special teams unit, making the team as a UDFA out of Georgia Southern.
He didn't have a great athletic profile, nor was he someone you wanted to play on defense, but that man loved playing special teams and he was really good at it. His lasting memory with the Vikings came in the blowout loss to the Green Bay Packers when he forced and recovered a fumble on a punt return.
In theory, Thompson could potentially come back if he can pass a physical, but his time with the organization is likely complete.
