J.J. McCarthy, Ryan Kelly among starters ruled out vs. Bengals

There aren’t a ton of surprises on the final injury report. We have “known” that McCarthy was going to miss the game since head coach Kevin O’Connell’s press conference on Monday, followed by ESPN’s Adam Schefter claiming it would be 2-4 weeks.

“He’s progressed,” said head coach Kevin O’Connell. “He was able to be out at practice and stand right next to me, as I’m calling the plays into Carson. That’s the best development and dialogue in this particular short term that he’s going to be able to have. He’s been great at handling his responsibilities from a rehab standpoint. So we’re kind of through the initial kind of wave of that, getting the swelling down and all those things.

“I know he was in it [walking boot] on the practice field just as a precautionary thing, because if it’s not a quarterback, you’re gonna try to get that guy off his feet, but trying to tell him not to come out there would have been virtually impossible. But I know he was in it for a precaution today.”

The biggest thing to take away from O’Connell’s statement on McCarthy is about the development. It’s continuing as much as possible with McCarthy still in the boot, which is a great thing.

Not having Kelly is going to be tough for the Vikings, but it will help the Vikings continue to evaluate second-year player Michael Jurgens in his first start. Skule being out also means that there will be a new left tackle. Will it be Darrisaw, second-year player Walter Rouse, or possibly kicking Blake Brandel back out to tackle?

Getting both Van Ginkel and Smith back would be a huge factor for the Vikings’ defense. The run defense needs a boost, and Smith’s ability to read what the offense is doing and attack will be a boost.

The next injury update we will get is Saturday at 3:oo P.M. CT when the Viking have to declare any practice squad elevations. If they have any, it will be a signal as to what could happen on Sunday afternoon.
