Whenever Bill Belichick says something about his former team, it's always going to catch everyone's attention.
But this week was even more interesting considering the New England Patriots rose to the challenge and came out on top against the New York Jets.
And because of that, he actually did saw something positive about the Patriots.
“It was a great drive by Jacoby [Brissett] and the #Patriots there at the end, obviously [Rhamondre] Stevenson had a big game," Belichick said on the Pat McAfee Show. "You know, tough day for the Jets. Used up all their timeouts in the first quarter, missed PAT, the scrambles. [Drake] Maye ran more than he threw for. Just a lot of mistakes by the Jets and that ended up killing them in the end…
"Big win for ‘em. Big week for the #Patriots at home against the Jets. The Jets are now in a tough spot.”
Belichick is known for holding a grudge, and considering Patriots owner Robert Kraft made it public recently that he actually fired the future Hall of Fame coach, it's no secret that New England isn't his favorite team.
So when the team suffered their six loss in a row last week, he took full advantage. Specifically, he slammed Jerod Mayo for his "soft" comments.
“You know, defensively, the Patriots led the league last year in rushing defense. Yards per carry, No. 1 in the league. And this year, they’re way down in the 20s. It’s the same guys,” Belichick said. “They re-signed (Anfernee) Jennings. They re-signed (Jahlani) Tavai. Obviously, (Kyle) Dugger. Marcus Jones and (Christian) Gonzalez have been healthy all year, which they were both on IR at this point last year. You’ve got (Deatrich) Wise, you’ve got (Davon) Godchaux, you’ve got Keion White, you’ve got (Marte) Mapu … It’s a lot of the same players, and in some cases I would say more.
“I’m kind of hurt for those guys. To call them soft, they’re not soft. They were the best team in the league last year against the run. Those guys went out there and did it even though we couldn’t score many points offensively. I feel bad for the defensive players on that one because that’s a tough group. … Those guys are all tough players, they’ll strap it up and go.”
What a change in his tone in just a week.
