When the New England Patriots parted ways with Bill Belichick following the 2023 season, they already knew who was going to take over.
Jerod Mayo was picked by Robert Kraft as Belichick's successor, but after just one year, Mayo has now been fired.
And during an appearance on ESPN's The Pat McAfee Show, Belichick was asked about this.
“The Patriots situation, honestly I don’t have too much of a comment on that. Robert Kraft, Jonathan Kraft, Robyn Glaser, they’re the decision-makers there. Who exactly does what and so forth — Mayo was hand-picked by Robert — but in the end the decision making is something that they’d have to comment on and identify,” Belichick said. “They’re the ones that are really making the calls there, so they’re the ones that should comment on that. I really don’t know that from the outside looking in.
“They haven’t called me and asked, so I don’t know,” the former Patriots head coach added.
Belichick hasn't commented much on the Patriots this season, and in this case, he said as little as he could about the whole thing.
However, It's well known that Belichick wasn't happy about the way things ended for him in New England. So that will always factor into his answers about the Patriots.
Robert Kraft also spoke with reporters on Monday and took full responsibility for what happened this season. And because of his personal relationship with Mayo, this was not a decision he took lightly.
“This whole situation is on me. I feel terrible for Jerod because I put him in an untenable situation,” Kraft said. “I know that he has all the tools as a head coach to be successful in the league. He just needed more time before taking the job. In the end, I’m a fan of this team first, and now I have to go out and find a coach who can get us back to the playoffs and hopefully championships."
