FOXBOROUGH, Mass – Davon Godchaux made quite a stir earlier this week after a comment he made on the radio went viral. And in the past when players were too forward with the media, they would sometimes be punished by the coaching staff. And often times it would result in a benching.
But Jerod Mayo's tone when asked about this was a welcomed change. And that's something Godchaux was happy to see.
"I know some people wouldn't allow that, so it's great when he can back it and put a stamp on it," he told A to Z Sports.
This all started when he spoke on the radio earlier this week.
“We just all gotta get on the same page,” the defensive tackle said on WEEI. “We got guys — just being honest — some guys just being kind of selfish.”
Head coach Jerod Mayo was asked about his thoughts on the comments, and actually expressed how he's happy the players feel comfortable enough to speak out.
"I'm okay with a player voicing that, because that's what I said in the squad meeting. So, everything I say to the players, and I'm not saying it as a secret," the head coach told reporters on Wednesday. "We just have to play better together. Especially defensively."
"Look – well, I would say across the board – it takes 11 people to make a big play. I know one person gets all the praise and things like that, but it takes everyone being on the same page. I agree with DG [Davon Godchaux] in regard to some of those plays are selfish plays. That's exactly what it is."
Godchaux couldn't help but smile when he was asked about this support from his coach. And he went on to explain that the comments were directed at one person in particular. It's towards the entire defense.
"Like I said, it's no bad blood between nobody," he said. "We just want to get better because we know we have a top 10 defense. So we want to just kind of eliminate the bad film and just get from it."
The defensive tackle also thinks Mayo is so supportive in this manner because he's been in their shoes before.
"Absolutely, he understands," Godchaux stressed. "Like I said, it's good he put a stamp on it yesterday in the media. I know DeMarcus (Covington) talked about it today in the media."
What a time in New England.
