While many of the questions surrounding the 2024 season for the New England Patriots have been answered, there is still one more to answer.
And that's what's next for Mac Jones.
The quarterback had a breakout rookie season in 2021, but severely declined the following two years. Things hit their lowest point this past season when he was ultimately benched in favor of Bailey Zappe.
So with that, former Patriots safety and current Sunday Night Football analyst Devin McCourty offered his opinion on the matter.
"I think it would help him to be elsewhere," McCourty simply said on the Eye on Foxborough Podcast. "I think he’s young enough in his career that there are other teams out there who are gonna look and be like, ‘we really like this guy.’”
Jones impressed many coming out of the draft, and it was the Patriots who ultimately landed the quarterback with the 15th overall pick. That season, he finished with 3,801 passing yards and 22 passing touchdowns along with 129 rushing yards, being named to the Pro Bowl in his first season.
However when Josh McDaniels left for Las Vegas, things went downhill.
“I think it’s tough. I think Mac’s a great guy who has fully invested himself and jumped into being in New England, jumped into being with the Patriots," McCourty said. "I think from being around him, he’s that type of person. He doesn’t want to fail, he wants to give it all he’s got.”
“I think even as you watch him go through the different things last year, if you watch him on the sideline, he was always there," he added. "He always seemed into the game, encouraging, talking to Zappe. I think overall he’s just a good person.”
And McCourty even floated one place that would make a lot of sense for the quarterback. The safety explained how the 49ers were reportedly interested in Jones during the 2021 Draft, but they ultimately traded up for Trey Lance with the third overall pick.
And while they have Brock Purdy, Jones could head across the country and join the depth chart over there, finally giving him a clean slate.
“I think he’s young enough, where if the opportunity comes from them to trade him, it would help both sides.”
