FOXBOROUGH, Mass – Drake Maye and Joe Milton III joined the New England Patriots at the same time and spent a lot of time together during the 2024 season.
But, after a promising game from the former Tennessee Volunteers quarterback in the Patriots season finale, he decided it was time to move on and take an opportunity that would give him a better chance to play. New England ultimately traded him and a 7th-round pick to the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for a 5th-round pick.
And on Thursday, quarterback Drake Maye spoke for the first time since Week 18 and revealed his initial reaction to the Milton trade.
“Yeah, I texted Joe. Me and Joe, we came in together. We learned the offense together. We were competing every day to see who could out-throw each other in practice," Maye told reporters. "And obviously, he’s got a big arm, so it was cool for him to get a chance to go hopefully be a backup,”
“And I think you saw him in the Bills game, the potential. And I think he’s fun, because we have kind of a similar playstyle a little bit. And it was fun relating to our similar college offense to this offense," he added. "And it was cool to kind of be in the room and have somebody bounce off ideas, or hey, you’re doing this in college and stuff like that. So cool for Joe, and I know probably, you never know, might play him again or see him down the road.”
The quarterback room looks a lot different this season outside of Maye. Veteran Jacoby Brissett signed with the Arizona Cardinals and Milton was traded. Plus, offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt and quarterbacks coach TC McCartney were replaced by Josh McDaniels and Ashton Grant.
But with all these changes, the one thing that has stayed the same is Maye, who is ready to take a big step in Year 2. However, he'll always be rooting on his former teammate too.
