The New England Patriots needed a quarterback that could help turn the tide in Foxborough. And they used their No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft to bring one in.

The Patriots selected former University of North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye in the first round, despite having entertained some offers from other teams about trading the pick.

One of those teams that showed interest was the New York Giants.

And that's because Drake Maye really impressed head coach Brian Daboll and the rest of the staff during his pre-draft meeting.

This meeting was showcased on the latest episode of HBO's “Hard Knocks” docuseries, where Maye took time dissecting plays and formations on the white boards in New York.

Daboll didn't hold back, challenging Maye throughout the meeting, but the quarterback held his own. And the quarterback was taking in all the information, repeating what he was hearing and making sure that he understood it all.

The New York Giants held the No. 6 overall pick in the draft, so it was expected that Maye would not drop that low on the board. While they asked about a trade, they ultimately stayed where they were and selected LSU receiver Malik Nabers with the sixth pick.

At the end of the 2023 season, the Giants finished with a 6-11 record, while the Patriots had the second worst record in the league, sitting at 4-13. And one of New York's six wins came against the Patriots.

Two quarterback's went off the board prior to Maye getting picked — Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels.

Williams went first overall to the Chicago Bears, while Daniels was picked by the Washington Commanders. Those two are viewed as the immediate starters, but for Maye, things are a bit different.

The Patriots brought in veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett this offseason to serve as a mentor to the rookie. But as it stands, he is also the current starter if the season were to start today.

There has been discussions on whether Maye will even play during his rookie season, or if they will sit him and let Brissett be the true starter. It worked for the Kansas City Chiefs, who sat Patrick Mahomes behind Alex Smith during his rookie year. And now he's led the Chiefs to three Super Bowl championships.

However, fans are hoping that Maye gets the opportunity to show what he's capable of during the 2024 season, even if it's not in the first week.

Maye has improved a lot since joining the team, but training camp will be the biggest test. Let's see how he does.
